S – Specific

What will you accomplish?

Setting clearly defined goals increases your chances of success. A vague goal like “get more fit” doesn’t sound too bad. But without specifying what “get more fit” means to you, it may never happen. A more specific version of “get more fit” could be “go to CrossFit four times each week for the next six months.”

M – Measurable

How will you know when you have accomplished your goal?

Make sure that your goals are measurable. Creating measurable goals also gives you a way to track your progress. Not only will you know when you’ve achieved a measurable goal, but you’ll also be able to tell if you’re on track along the way.

A – Achievable

Is your goal realistic?

Part of the goal-setting process is taking an honest look at where your current fitness level is and what you’re working toward. You want your goals to challenge you, but at the same time, they also need to achievable with the outcome in your control. A goal that is beyond your reach can end up having a negative effect on your motivation. Use your past fitness history to help you gauge what is realistic for the future.

R – Relevant

Why are this goal and its result important to you?

Your goals need to mean something to you. If you find that you’re showing up for workouts and just going through the motions, take some time to figure out why you want to achieve a specific goal. Do you care about the outcome and feel invested in the process? If not, then it’s time to reassess your goals and come up with something relevant and exciting to you.

T – Time-Based

What is the timeframe for accomplishing your goal?

A goal without a deadline will likely keep getting pushed into the future. When you set a goal, also create a timeline. Once you have the final deadline, work backward and create check-in points. These mini-deadlines will help keep you on track and give you an idea of how well you’re progressing.
