Beat-a-Workout-Slump-Contender-CrossFitTraining week after week and building a consistent workout routine is excellent for your physical and mental health. But at some point, you might find yourself in a bit of a workout slump.

A workout slump could be due to many different things – boredom, overtraining, lack of a challenge, or not enough variety in your workouts. Here are a few ways to help you beat a workout slump:

1. Mix Things Up

Building a sustainable habit around a consistent workout schedule is awesome! The catch is making sure to keep some variety in your routine. Heading to the gym and doing the same workout each time is more than likely going to lead you to a fitness plateau.

Group CrossFit classes are an excellent way to mix things up. Not only do you get guidance from a knowledgeable coach, but you also get tons of variety in each workout. Instead of trying to think of a workout on your own, your coach does all the programming for you. In addition to group classes, you can also find variety in your workouts by trying out a new class time or coach. Or, if your gym offers programs in addition to CrossFit (like a barbell club or yoga), give it a try.

2. Set (or Re-Set) Goals

If it’s been a while since you set some fitness or performance goals, now is a great time to do so. It’s common to end up in a workout slump if you don’t feel like your workouts have any purpose. Sure, you’re physically active. But if you feel like you’re in a rut, then goal-setting can provide some direction to your training. Instead of showing up for a class and going through the motions, goals give you something to work toward.

At the same time, if you’ve set goals for yourself in the past, you may have forgotten about them. Or, maybe let them fade into the background. Take some time to revisit your past goals. Are they still relevant? Are you excited to get back on track and work toward achieving them? If not, no big deal. Think about where you are in your current training and then re-set your goals around where you’d like to be in a few months.

3. Challenge Yourself

Another slump-busting tactic is to find a new way to challenge yourself. If you feel like you’re stuck in the same place, a new challenge might be what you need to get excited about training again. Maybe you’ve always wanted to master a skill or a movement like double unders or your first muscle-up? Or you can take a completely different approach and challenge yourself to get back to the basics and refine your technique through foundational movements. Starting with these basic skills can be a good reminder of where you started and how far you’ve come.
